Shiv Sena Calls for Burqa Ban in India

Shiv Sena has called for a Burqa Ban. The logic it states in its mouth piece is that since the person who stole a baby from the hospital was wearing a burqa. In a manner, its a self goal by the ban callers. The reason is that if burqa is banned and then a child snatcher uses a ” ghunghat” (Hindi name for veil worn by millions of Hindu faith), then? So logically, even ghunghat should also get the ban. The issue is that, most religions are so similar that you cannot point finger without four other fingers pointing back at you. We are not suggesting a tit for tat. We are saying a criminal is a criminal and he will use something to hide irrespective if its a ghunghat or a burkha. Shiv Sena can suggest an alternative “no criminal should wear a burkha when they do those bad things.”

Now, veil represents modesty and respect in their own culture. The veil in most cultures is very deep-rooted. Without veil, they feel exposed (we don’t want to use the other word).

In France, veil is going to be banned is “in public places.” The recent amendments says that a veil can be used in religious public places. The burqa can be worn in privacy of home or private places. The politicians call it paper bag with two holes.

Although it looks as simple as ban burkha for good and the conspiracy against Muslims etc. But, Shiv Sena is going into a murkier issue. Shiv Sena should understand that it is pulling itself into a no go area called “women dressing.” This is a very dangerous territory. Ask Shiv sena to define what is the right dressing? If a lady is “under dressed”, then they have a problem. If the lady is “over dressed,” then they have a problem. But, Shiv Sena has never told us what it is like to be ladies to be right dressed? It may be because, we can never make women understand the concept. It is best left to women to decide what they want to wear.
